Wisdom 14
- 1 Kun taas joku hankitsee merimatkaa, ja aikoo kulkea halki rajujen aaltojen, niin hän huutaa avuksensa puuta, joka on hauraampi kuin se laiva, joka häntä kuljettaa.
- 2 Sillä laivan on suunnitellut ansaitsemisen halu, ja mestari Viisaus on sen rakentanut.
- 3 Ja sinun huolenpitosi, oi Isä, ohjaa sen kulkua, sillä sinä olet valmistanut mereenkin tien ja aaltoihin varman polun
- 4 osoittaaksesi, että sinä voit pelastaa kaikesta, vaikka joku purjehdustaidotonkin astuisi laivaan.

- 7 Sillä siunattu on se puu, jonka kautta vanhurskaus tulee.
- 8 Mutta käsillä tehty olkoon kirottu, niin hyvin se itse kuin sen tekijä; jälkimmäinen, koska hän on sen tehnyt, edellinen, koska sitä kutsutaan jumalaksi, vaikka se on katoavainen kappale.
- 9 Sillä Jumala vihaa yhtäläisesti jumalatonta kuin hänen jumalattomuuttansakin;

- 13 Sillä ei niitä alusta alkaen ollut, eikä niitä ole oleva ainaisesti,
- 14 vaan ihmisten turhasta kuvittelusta ne ovat tulleet maailmaan; sentähden on myös niille säädetty äkillinen loppu.
- 15 Sillä liian aikaisen surun kalvamana teetti isä kuvan äkisti poistemmatusta lapsestansa ja alkoi nyt jumalana kunnioittaa kuollutta ihmistä, ja sääti niille, jotka olivat hänen alaisiansa, salaisia menoja ja vihkimyksiä.
- 16 Sitten tuo jumalaton tapa aikaa myöten yhä vahvistui ja sitä alettiin noudattaa lakina. Myös hallitsijain käskystä ruvettiin palvelemaan veistettyjä kuvia.
- 17 Sillä kun ihmiset eivät voineet kasvojen edessä osoittaa kunnioitustaan kaukana asuville, niin he kuvasivat tuon kaukana asuvan ulkomuodon ja tekivät näkyvän kuvan kunnioittamastaan kuninkaasta imarrellaksensa harrastuksellaan tuota poissa olevaa, ikäänkuin hän olisi läsnä.
- 18 Ja taiteilijan kunnianhimo yllytti yhä innokkaampaan palvelemiseen niitäkin, jotka eivät tunteneet kuvattua itseänsä.
- 19 Joku ehkä tahtoi päästä hallitsijan suosioon ja ponnisti taitoaan saadakseen aikaan kaunistellun yhdennäköisyyden.
- 20 Mutta rahvas, jota veistoksen kauneus viehätti, alkoi nyt pitää jumaloitavana häntä, jota vielä äsken kunnioitettiin pelkkänä ihmisenä.
- 21 Ja tästä tuli paula elämälle, sillä joko onnettomuuden tai julman hallituksen pakottamina ihmiset tällöin antoivat kivelle ja puulle nimen, joka niille ei kuulu.
- 22 Mutta ei riittänyt heille se, että eksyivät pois Jumalan tuntemisesta, vaan vieläpä he, vaikka heidän elämänsä on suurta sotaa, heidän ymmärtämättömyytensä tähden, nimittävät tällaista pahaa rauhaksi.
- 23 Sillä viettäessään uhrijuhlia, joissa lapsia surmataan, taikka muita kätkettyjä salamenoja tai hillittömiä juominkejaan eriskummaisine tapoineen
- 24 he eivät enää välitä hengestä eivätkä avioliiton puhtaudesta, vaan toinen raivaa toisen tieltänsä salakavalasti ja tuottaa hänelle kärsimystä viettelemällä hänen vaimonsa.
- 25 Kaikkialla vallitsee sekaisin verenvuodatus ja murha, varkaus ja petos, turmelus ja uskottomuus, metelit, valapattoisuus, hyvien ahdistaminen,
- 26 kiittämättömyys, sielujen saastutus, luonnoton sukupuoliyhteys, avioliittojen sekasorto, haureus ja irstaus.
- 27 Sillä noiden epäjumalain palvelu, joita ei sovi edes nimeltä mainita, on kaiken pahan alku, syy ja täyttymys.
- 28 He näet joko riehuvat ilon hurmiossa tai profetoivat valhetta tai elävät väärämielisesti tai kerkeästi vannovat väärin.
- 29 Sillä kun he luottavat hengettömiin epäjumalankuviin, eivät he odota joutuvansa kärsimään mitään pahaa, vaikka ovatkin vannoneet väärin.
- 30 Mutta molemmista tulee heille kosto: niinhyvin siitä, että ovat ajatelleet pahaa Jumalasta pitäytymällä epäjumalankuviin, kuin siitäkin, että vilpillisesti ovat vannoneet väärin, pitäen halpana sen, mikä pyhää on.
- 31 Sillä ei niitten voima, joiden nimeen vannotaan, vaan synnintekijälle tuleva kosto kohtaa aina väärämielisten rikkomusta.
