- 2 Jeg sa: Jeg vil vokte mine veier, så jeg ikke synder med min tunge; jeg vil legge munnkurv på min munn, så lenge den ugudelige ennu er for mine øine.
- 3 Jeg blev taus og var aldeles stille, jeg tidde uten gagn, og min smerte blev oprørt.
- 4 Mitt hjerte blev hett inneni mig, ved min grublen optendtes ild; - jeg talte med min tunge:
- 5 La mig vite, Herre, min ende, og mine dagers mål, hvad det er! La mig få vite hvad tid jeg skal bort!
- 6 Se, som en håndsbredd har du satt mine dager, og min livstid er som intet for dig; visselig, bare tomhet er hvert menneske, hvor fast han enn står. Sela.
- 7 Bare som et skyggebillede vandrer mannen, bare tomhet er deres uro; han dynger op og vet ikke hvem som skal samle det inn.
- 8 Og nu, hvad håper jeg på Herre? - Mitt håp står til dig.
- 9 Frels mig fra alle mine overtredelser, gjør mig ikke til spott for dåren!
- 10 Jeg tier, jeg later ikke op min munn; for du har gjort det.
- 11 Ta bort fra mig din plage! For din hånds slag er jeg blitt til intet.
- 12 Tukter du en mann med straff for misgjerning, da fortærer du hans herlighet likesom møll; bare tomhet er hvert menneske. Sela.
- 13 Hør min bønn, Herre, og vend øret til mitt rop, ti ikke til min gråt! for jeg er en fremmed hos dig, en gjest som alle mine fedre. Se bort fra mig, så mitt åsyn må bli opklaret, før jeg går herfra og er ikke mere!
