- 1 ฝ่ายโมเสสเลี้ยงฝูงแพะแกะของเยโธรพ่อตาของเขา ผู้เป็นปุโรหิตของคนมีเดียน และท่านได้พาฝูงแพะแกะไปด้านหลังของถิ่นทุรกันดาร และมาถึงภูเขาของพระเจ้า คือโฮเรบ
- 2 ทูตสวรรค์ของพระเยโฮวาห์ก็ปรากฏแก่โมเสสในเปลวไฟซึ่งอยู่ท่ามกลางพุ่มไม้ โมเสสจึงมองดูและดูเถิด พุ่มไม้นั้นมีไฟลุกโชนอยู่ แต่พุ่มไม้นั้นมิได้ไหม้โทรมไป
- 3 โมเสสจึงกล่าวว่า “ข้าจะแวะเข้าไปดูสิ่งแปลกประหลาดนี้ ว่าเหตุไฉนพุ่มไม้จึงไม่ไหม้”
- 4 และเมื่อพระเยโฮวาห์ทอดพระเนตรเห็นเขาเดินเข้ามาดู พระเจ้าจึงตรัสแก่เขาออกมาจากท่ามกลางพุ่มไม้นั้นว่า “โมเสส โมเสส” และโมเสสทูลตอบว่า “ข้าพระองค์อยู่ที่นี่”
- 5 พระองค์จึงตรัสว่า “อย่าเข้ามาใกล้ที่นี่ จงถอดรองเท้าของเจ้าออกเสีย เพราะว่าที่ซึ่งเจ้ายืนอยู่นี้เป็นที่บริสุทธิ์”
- 6 แล้วพระองค์ตรัสอีกว่า “เราเป็นพระเจ้าของบิดาเจ้า เป็นพระเจ้าของอับราฮัม เป็นพระเจ้าของอิสอัค และเป็นพระเจ้าของยาโคบ” และโมเสสปิดหน้าเสีย เพราะกลัวไม่กล้ามองดูพระเจ้า
- 7 และพระเยโฮวาห์ตรัสว่า “เราเห็นความทุกข์ของพลไพร่ของเราที่อยู่ในประเทศอียิปต์แล้ว และได้ยินเสียงร้องของเขา เพราะเหตุพวกนายงานของเขา ด้วยเรารู้ถึงความทุกข์ร้อนต่างๆของเขา
- 8 และเราลงมาเพื่อจะช่วยเขาให้รอดพ้นจากมือของชาวอียิปต์ และนำเขาออกจากประเทศนั้น ไปยังแผ่นดินที่อุดมกว้างขวาง เป็นแผ่นดินที่มีน้ำนมและน้ำผึ้งไหลบริบูรณ์ คือไปยังที่อยู่ของชาวคานาอัน คนฮิตไทต์ คนอาโมไรต์ คนเปริสซี คนฮีไวต์ และคนเยบุส
- 9 เพราะฉะนั้น ดูเถิด บัดนี้คำร่ำร้องของชนชาติอิสราเอลมาถึงเราแล้ว ทั้งเราได้เห็นการข่มเหงซึ่งชาวอียิปต์กระทำต่อเขาแล้ว
- 10 เพราะฉะนั้น จงมาเถิด บัดนี้เราจะใช้เจ้าไปเฝ้าฟาโรห์ เพื่อเจ้าจะได้พาพลไพร่ของเรา คือชนชาติอิสราเอล ออกจากอียิปต์”
- 11 ฝ่ายโมเสสจึงทูลพระเจ้าว่า “ข้าพระองค์เป็นผู้ใดเล่า ซึ่งข้าพระองค์จะไปเฝ้าฟาโรห์และจะนำชนชาติอิสราเอลออกจากอียิปต์”
- 12 พระองค์จึงตรัสว่า “เราจะอยู่กับเจ้าแน่ และนี่จะเป็นหมายสำคัญให้เจ้ารู้ว่าเราใช้ให้เจ้าไป คือเมื่อเจ้านำพลไพร่ออกจากอียิปต์แล้ว เจ้าทั้งหลายจะมาปรนนิบัติพระเจ้าบนภูเขานี้”
- 13 และโมเสสทูลพระเจ้าว่า “ดูเถิด เมื่อข้าพระองค์ไปหาชนชาติอิสราเอล และบอกพวกเขาว่า ‘พระเจ้าแห่งบรรพบุรุษของท่านทั้งหลายทรงใช้ข้าพเจ้ามาหาท่าน’ และเขาจะพูดกับข้าพเจ้าว่า ‘พระองค์ทรงพระนามว่ากระไร’ ข้าพระองค์จะกล่าวแก่เขาอย่างไร”
- 14 พระเจ้าจึงตรัสกับโมเสสว่า “เราเป็นผู้ซึ่งเราเป็น” แล้วพระองค์ตรัสว่า “เจ้าจงไปบอกชนชาติอิสราเอลว่า ‘เราเป็น ได้ทรงใช้ข้าพเจ้ามาหาท่านทั้งหลาย’”
- 15 พระเจ้าจึงตรัสกับโมเสสอีกว่า “เจ้าจงกล่าวแก่ชนชาติอิสราเอลว่าดังนี้ ‘พระเยโฮวาห์พระเจ้าแห่งบรรพบุรุษของท่าน คือพระเจ้าของอับราฮัม พระเจ้าของอิสอัคและพระเจ้าของยาโคบ ทรงใช้ให้ข้าพเจ้ามาหาท่าน’ นี่เป็นนามของเราตลอดไปเป็นนิตย์ และนี่เป็นที่ระลึกของเราตลอดทุกชั่วอายุ
- 16 จงไปรวบรวมพวกผู้ใหญ่ของอิสราเอลให้มาประชุมพร้อมกัน แล้วกล่าวแก่เขาว่า ‘พระเยโฮวาห์พระเจ้าแห่งบรรพบุรุษของท่าน คือพระเจ้าของอับราฮัม ของอิสอัค และของยาโคบ ปรากฏแก่ข้าพเจ้า ตรัสว่า “แท้จริงเราลงมาเยี่ยมเจ้าทั้งหลายแล้ว และได้เห็นสิ่งซึ่งเขาได้กระทำแก่เจ้าในอียิปต์
- 17 และเราได้กล่าวไว้แล้วว่า เราจะพาเจ้าทั้งหลายไปให้พ้นจากความทุกข์ในประเทศอียิปต์ ไปยังแผ่นดินของชาวคานาอัน คนฮิตไทต์ คนอาโมไรต์ คนเปริสซี คนฮีไวต์และคนเยบุส ไปยังแผ่นดินซึ่งมีน้ำนมและน้ำผึ้งไหลบริบูรณ์”’
- 18 และเขาก็จะเชื่อฟังคำของเจ้า แล้วพวกเจ้า ทั้งเจ้ากับพวกผู้ใหญ่ของคนอิสราเอล จงพากันไปเฝ้ากษัตริย์ของอียิปต์ และเจ้าจงทูลพระองค์ว่า ‘พระเยโฮวาห์พระเจ้าของคนฮีบรู ทรงปรากฏแก่ข้าพระองค์ทั้งหลาย บัดนี้ ขอได้โปรดให้ข้าพระองค์เดินทางไปในถิ่นทุรกันดารสักสามวันเพื่อจะถวายเครื่องบูชาแด่พระเยโฮวาห์พระเจ้าของเรา’
- 19 เรารู้แน่แล้วว่า กษัตริย์แห่งอียิปต์จะไม่ยอมให้พวกเจ้าไป แม้กระทั่งโดยหัตถ์อันทรงฤทธิ์
- 20 และเราจะเหยียดมือของเราออกประหารอียิปต์ด้วยมหัศจรรย์ต่างๆของเราที่เราจะกระทำในท่ามกลางประเทศนั้น แล้วหลังจากนั้น กษัตริย์ก็จะยอมปล่อยพวกเจ้าไป
- 21 และเราจะให้พลไพร่นี้เป็นที่โปรดปรานในสายตาของชาวอียิปต์ และต่อมา เมื่อเจ้าทั้งหลายออกไปก็จะไม่ต้องไปมือเปล่า
- 22 แต่ผู้หญิงทุกคนจะขอเครื่องเงินเครื่องทองและเสื้อผ้าจากเพื่อนบ้านของเขา และจากหญิงที่อาศัยอยู่ในเรือนของเขา และเจ้าจงเอาของเหล่านั้นไปแต่งให้บุตรชายหญิงของเจ้า และเจ้าจะได้ริบเอาสิ่งของของชาวอียิปต์”
